5 AI Marketing Shifts Every CMO Should Be Watching In 2027

Nearly nine in 10 marketers say AI saves them time. Only three in 10 report significant, measurable results.

Every CMO’s 2027 plan should address that gap.

AI has become a daily habit for marketers. Nearly three-quarters of respondents to Social Media Examiner’s 2026 AI Marketing Industry Report use it every day, compared with just over one-third in 2024.

Michael Stelzner, founder of Social Media Examiner and author of the report, captures the shift: “That’s not a trend. That’s a transformation.”

The July survey included 681 marketers. Most work at businesses with 10 or fewer people, making the findings a directional signal rather than an enterprise benchmark.

As marketers gather in Cleveland for MAICON, one of the largest marketing conferences in the US, the leadership question is becoming more demanding. What does all that AI use actually deliver?

For CMOs planning for 2027, five shifts stand out.

1. AI Becomes The Marketing Operating Layer

A marketer can use AI every day while the marketing department still operates much as it always has. Research gets copied between tools. Creative waits for approval. Campaign results arrive too late to shape the next decision.

SmarterX’s 2026 State of AI for Business Report, based on more than 2,100 professionals, captures that gap. More than half have moved beyond experimentation, but only one-quarter say their organizations have reached the stage of scaling AI.

“AI adoption is moving beyond experimentation and into the way work actually gets done. But organizations aren’t moving at the same pace: only 25% have reached the scaling phase,” said Paul Roetzer, founder and CEO of SmarterX and Marketing AI Institute and creator of MAICON.

The study measures individual and organizational adoption differently, but the leadership challenge is clear. Employees are changing how they work faster than companies are building the systems to support them.

2. The AI ROI Reckoning Arrives

A faster process can be valuable. But its value needs a destination.
