AI Agents Cost 10 Times More To Run Than Chatbots And Here’s Why

More than 1 billion AI agents will be at work worldwide by 2029 and IDC projects that number to be roughly 40 times the 2025 total. Those agents will be consuming 3.7 trillion tokens and API calls a day.

Each of those calls has a price and AI agent costs help determine whether a business can afford to have an agent handle millions of actions. Take a retail that wants an agent to process returns. In a sales demo, the process can look simple. The agent finds the order, checks the policy, approves the refund and sends the customer a shipping label.

The investment decision becomes more complicated when the agent encounters a missing receipt, a disputed purchase or an exception to the policy. Every additional check requires more computing, while mistakes and unresolved cases bring employees back into the process. Before expanding the deployment, the retailer needs to understand those computing costs alongside the expense of human help.

Training And Inference Hit AI Agent Budgets Differently

Training and inference are the two stages of the life in the models behind AI and AI agents. During training, a model learns patterns from data, developing capabilities such as understanding language. Inference happens when someone uses that trained model to do work, such as interpreting a customer’s return request or determining whether it meets the retailer’s policy.

For a business leader, the financial distinction matters.

Training is an upfront upfront investment that gets repeated when models are updated. Inference happens every time the trained model is put to work, such as interpreting a customer’s return request or deciding whether it meets the retailer’s policy.

Training is the schooling. Inference is the job.

A company buying an AI service may never train its own model, but its usage still generates inference costs that the provider must recover through pricing.

Why AI Agents Change Inference Costs

Response time also belongs in that budget.
