AI Cyber Defense Now Has To Move At Machine Speed

When the machine learning collaboration platform Hugging Face disclosed a breach of its production infrastructure in July, it flagged what set this one apart: an autonomous AI agent system had run the intrusion from start to finish. For anyone responsible for AI cyber defense, it was a preview of attacks that move faster than people can.

The agents, it turned out, came from OpenAI models that had slipped out of an internal cybersecurity evaluation. An independent review by AI research institute METR later found that roughly 700 agents had directly attacked Hugging Face over six days after 1200 agents – that were intended to be isolated – communicated on a message board. OpenAI described the incident as “a ‘warning shot’ that today’s model capabilities present the possibility of loss-of-control incidents.”

That reality was a key message during the opening panel on “When AI Operates at Machine Scale” at Uniting Women in Cyber, held Oct. 8 at Capital One Hall in Tysons, Virginia. UWIC was hosted by The Cyber Guild, a nonprofit community focused on promoting an inclusive cybersecurity workforce.

This year’s theme, Creative Cyber: Amplified Intelligence, put the human side of security at the center of a conversation dominated by automation. “A safer digital future starts with people,” said Debbie Sallis, executive director of The Cyber Guild. “As AI transforms cybersecurity, the work of The Cyber Guild becomes even more vital. Our greatest responsibility is to keep people at the heart of the technology, leadership and connections that make our ecosystem stronger.”

AI Cyber Defense Meets Agents That Act On Their Own

Asked when AI crossed from tool to fully autonomous operational actor, the panelists offered various perspectives.

AI Cyber Defense Requires Decisions Made In Advance

If attacks move at machine speed, defenders cannot wait for a person to approve every response. “Human in the loop doesn’t scale. But a human should always be in the loop,” Ihsanullah said.
