Anthropic’s New Science Lab Announced Its First Major Discovery This Week
Earlier this month, Anthropic executives confirmed that the company has developed a biology wet-lab in the Bay Area to leverage its cutting edge AI models and agents to delve into deeper science problems and run physical experiments. Dario Amodei, the founder and leader of the company, has voiced his commitment to science numerous times in the past, including when he once exclaimed that he believed AI could likely find a cure to most diseases within the next 5-10 years. The goal with this wet lab will be to primarily start moving experiments beyond models and into the physical layer. As the company’s head of life sciences Eric Kauderer-Abrams confirmed, “We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work…We absolutely are doing that today, and I would describe our approach as being typical of what you would see in most biotech companies, where there’s some amount of that that we’re doing in our own facilities and some amount of that that we’re working with external partners on.” Although there are no specific commercial aspects yet confirmed by the company, it is clear that it wants to move life-sciences experiments beyond purely being “in-silico” and into tangible testing. With a wet lab, Anthropic now has a place to run physical experimentation. With Claude’s ability to posit millions of potential hypotheses, the opportunities are endless.
Undoubtedly, Anthropic is certainly not the only company that has thrown itself deeply into the world of science with AI. One legacy player that has been doing work in this arena for years is Alphabet, especially with its majority-backed Isomorphic Labs, which spun out of DeepMind in 2021. In partnership, both companies launched AlphaFold3 in 2024, which uses AI to predict the structures of proteins, DNA and RNA to advance the world of drug discovery. The models have made significant progress since then.
