Anthropic’s S-1 Promises New Scientific Discoveries—And New Threats

From the first page of AI giant Anthropic’s IPO prospectus, which was filed with the SEC today, the company trumpets its commitment to using AI for scientific research. “We have started to directly make biological discoveries with Claude,” the introduction reads, noting that Anthropic expects the model to make more breakthroughs in the future.

It’s referring to Anthropic’s own internal biology research, announced last month, where its software discovered a new enzyme family with properties similar to those used for CRISPR gene editing. But the company has also built a number of products for scientists. There’s Claude Science, which scientists can use to analyze data and create “publication-ready” figures or charts. The company also created Claude for Life Sciences, which aims to help in drug discovery research, as well as helping to produce FDA submissions and similar paperwork. Anthropic has also developed software that enables AI agents to operate lab equipment “such as microscopes, liquid handlers, and off-the-shelf robotic arms” to help automate research, the filing says.

The regulatory filing notes that the company brought in $16.3 billion in revenue (with an operating loss of $693 million) in the first half of 2026, but doesn’t break out how much money the company is pulling in from its research products specifically. However, it does namecheck customers like pharmaceutical giant Bristol Myers Squibb, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the University of California, San Francisco–plus it has made headlines partnering with companies like Lilly and Novo Nordisk. NASA also used Claude Code to help navigate the Mars rover Perseverance on a mission earlier this year.
