Can AI Save The Planet? How Nine Innovators Are Fighting Climate Change
From wildfires detected in minutes to discoveries beneath the ocean, global innovators reveal what AI can achieve—and what humanity must do next.
The Crisis: When Knowing Isn’t Enough
In July 2026, artificial intelligence detected a wildfire in Ruffano, Italy, while it was still smoldering. Sensors pinpointed the danger within minutes. But firefighters struggled to reach the remote terrain. Helicopters took more than two hours to arrive.
The forest kept burning.
“We caught a fire within minutes, while it was still smouldering,” recalls Carsten Brinkschulte, co-founder and CEO of Dryad Networks.
The technology had detected the danger. The system needed to stop it had not caught up.
That gap extends far beyond one wildfire. Satellites can spot fires, AI can forecast their spread, and underwater cameras can reveal ecosystems scientists have barely explored. But knowing what is happening does not guarantee we can change what happens next.
What good is detecting a disaster if we cannot stop it? What good is discovering an ecosystem if we cannot protect it?
Interviews with innovators from nine organizations reveal extraordinary advances in artificial intelligence—and a challenge far greater than inventing the next algorithm: connecting technology, investment, institutions, and human expertise quickly enough to make a measurable difference.
The race is no longer simply to build smarter machines. It is to turn intelligence into protection before more is lost.
From Warning to Action: The Race Against Fire
Two minutes and 32 seconds after a fire ignited during the 2026 XPRIZE Wildfire finals in Alaska, an AI-powered system detected it. Within ten minutes of ignition, it had accurately attacked the fire.
The system belonged to Anduril Industries, which won first place in Autonomous Wildfire Response ($1.2 million) and an additional $1 million Lockheed Martin Accurate Detection Intelligence Bonus Prize.
