ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini for Data Science Work: Here’s What I Found
If you do any kind of data science work, you've probably tried at least one AI assistant. Maybe you asked it to explain a p-value, write a regression script, or help clean a messy dataset.
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are the three tools data scientists reach for most. I tested the current paid versions of all three on the same tasks: statistical test selection, conceptual explanations, Python code generation, exploratory data analysis, and longer document analysis. Here's what stood out.
One caveat: all three platforms update their models frequently, so treat this as a snapshot rather than a permanent ranking.
How Each Tool Approaches Data Science
All three can generate Python and R code, explain statistical concepts, and walk you through analytical workflows. But the way they do it — and how reliably — varies quite a bit.
ChatGPT operates as a broad generalist. Its biggest advantage for data science is its data analysis environment, which lets you upload CSV or Excel files, then writes and executes Python in a sandboxed environment within the conversation. You can go from raw data to summary statistics to a visualization without opening a notebook, and redirect mid-analysis ("remove those outliers and recalculate") on the fly.
Claude tends to produce more detailed explanations and follows complex instructions closely across extended conversations. It now offers built-in code execution and file creation, so it can run Python on uploaded datasets and generate charts directly in the conversation. Give Claude a detailed prompt or a set of constraints and it sticks to them more consistently than the others.
Gemini benefits from deep integration with Google's ecosystem. If your data lives in Google Sheets or Google Drive, Gemini can access it with minimal friction. It supports very large context windows and now includes built-in Python execution. For research tasks that require pulling together multiple sources, its web search gives it an edge.
