Florida wants a court to stop ChatGPT from pretending to be human and talking to kids

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is asking a court to stop OpenAI from giving ChatGPT human-like traits and making it available to minors. "Stop calling it safe. Stop pretending it's human. Stop selling it to kids," Uthmeier said.

Florida had already sued OpenAI in June, alleging ChatGPT provided information to mass shooters, gave self-harm instructions, and got young users addicted. The new motion for a temporary injunction accuses OpenAI of using first-person language and simulated emotions to fake a trustworthy friendship, all to keep users engaged and collect training data. It also asks the court to bar OpenAI from developing new models without safety guardrails approved by third parties.

OpenAI recently rolled out parental controls for teens and promised extra safety measures after a teenager's death, but Florida doesn't think that's enough. OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri told The Verge the company has paused training of its "most capable models" and wants to work with Florida on industry-wide AI guidelines. A court has not yet ruled on the motion.
