Four Steps To Implement Autonomous Patching And Remediation
Dr. Deepak Kumar is Founder and CEO of Adaptiva, a leading endpoint management platform.
The old idea of a single monthly patching schedule doesn’t match how software updates actually percolate in enterprise environments today.
Why don’t organizations patch every vulnerability as soon as it arises? Because updates risk disrupting endpoint environments. When it’s time to apply a patch, a browser may be open, an application may be running, a laptop might be offline or an update may require a full system reboot.
While deployments can interfere with someone’s work, organizations have more to consider. Patch too slowly and exposure grows; patch everything immediately, and you risk creating operational problems.
This balancing act remains a significant challenge, and our analysis of 209 enterprise IT and security professionals surveyed between July and September 2025 found that 74% of organizations cite the coordination of vulnerability prioritization and remediation as their biggest security issue.
That’s the problem Autonomous Endpoint Management (AEM) has to solve. Autonomy doesn’t remove strategy from patching; it requires IT and security decision-makers to create explicit strategies that software can execute on. Four practical decisions are needed in order to enable an autonomous patching and remediation strategy.
Decide What Matters Most
Before we can configure policies for autonomous decision-making, we need to define our strategic priorities. Whether it is patching speed, more holistic compliance, greater application availability or operational stability, these priorities all compete with one another.
In practice, organizations can’t expect to achieve 100% patching compliance while also having zero operational disruption and 100% user satisfaction. By establishing priorities upfront, organizations create a foundation for patching and remediation strategies focused on the outcomes that matter most.
