How AI Solopreneurs Run Businesses Without Staff

Maor Shlomo built a vibe-coding startup called Base44 almost entirely by himself, grew it to 250,000 users in six months, and sold it to Wix for $80 million in cash in June 2025. By the time the deal closed he had brought on eight employees, so the company wasn’t technically a one-person operation at the finish line. But for most of its life, it was.

That’s the pattern defining business in 2026. A solopreneur AI tool stack lets one person handle coding, marketing, customer support, bookkeeping and sales without hiring anyone. Instead of a payroll, the founder runs a set of AI apps, chatbots and automation platforms that each do the work of a department. The result is a company with one name on the org chart and software doing the rest.

What Does an AI-Powered Solo Business Actually Look Like?

It does look smaller on paper and bigger in output. The founder is the only human in the building, but the business runs marketing campaigns, answers support tickets and ships product updates on a schedule that used to require a dozen hires.

The scale of this shift shows up in federal data, not just founder anecdotes. Nonemployer businesses, the U.S. Census Bureau’s term for firms with no paid staff, grew an average of 2.7% annually between 2012 and 2023, consistently outpacing growth among employer businesses. By 2023, those one-person operations accounted for roughly 6.4% of U.S. GDP, or about $1.8 trillion in receipts. Solo-founded startups now make up 36.3% of all new ventures tracked as of mid-2025, up from 23.7% in 2019.

What changed isn’t the ambition. It’s the cost. A founder running Claude for code, ChatGPT for drafting, Canva for design and Zapier for glue work can assemble a working tech stack in a much cheaper rate than what a single full-time hire would cost in salary and benefits.
