Intelligence As Capital: Reinventing Value In The AI Era

Pawan Anand is a senior technology executive and Portfolio Head at LTM, driving innovation in AI and digital engineering.

For decades, executives have used the same language for discussing enterprise value: revenue, margin, capital efficiency, intellectual property, talent and return on investment. Digital transformation changed many of the mechanisms behind value creation, but it did not substantially change that vocabulary. Cloud, data and software became increasingly important, yet technology was still largely treated as an enabler of the business.

AI is beginning to challenge that distinction.

In my previous Forbes article, I examined what happens when intelligence becomes embedded in the operating model itself. Organizations can sense changes earlier, distribute decisions differently and increasingly combine human judgment with machine intelligence.

That raises a question I believe deserves much more attention in executive conversations: If intelligence increasingly influences how an enterprise creates outcomes, should we continue treating it simply as a technology expense? I believe the answer is no. We need to start thinking about intelligence as capital.

From Operating Model To Value Model

The AI-native enterprise, which I explored in a different Forbes article, represented an important shift. AI stopped sitting primarily at the edge of the organization and began moving into workflows, decisions and operating processes.

That changes the value conversation. A customer-service agent that resolves more interactions is useful. An intelligent system that improves resolution patterns, informs product decisions and shares that learning across channels is something different. Its value does not sit neatly inside one use case. It begins to travel across the enterprise.

McKinsey makes a similar point, noting that “The opportunity to embed AI more fully into the enterprise will offer organizations new ways to capture value.”
