Nvidia is the dominant player in the AI chip market and Intel is a laggard there. Yet in the last year, Intel’s stock has outperformed its more successful rival – due not to competitive success but to White House backing in light of the government’s 9.9% equity interest in the company. In my view, stocks that exceed investor expectations outperform the ones that fall short.

What does that mean for how the two stocks will perform for the rest of 2026? Since expectations for Nvidia are much higher and Intel investors expect less, I’ve explored which of the two companies have a better chance of delivering faster, more profitable growth than investors expect.

Nvidia Vs. Intel Stock At A Glance

In the 1980s, Intel dominated the semiconductor market because its central processing unit chips were at the core of the fast-growing market for personal computers. However, since generative AI took center stage, Nvidia, the market leader in graphics processing units originally used to power computer games, has been the dominant semiconductor company.

Nvidia, which designs but does not manufacture GPUs, was taking the lead, but Intel was getting in trouble, especially after its former CEO Pat Gelsinger decided to lead a capital intensive push into building semiconductor factories. After Gelsinger became CEO in 2021, he poured money into an effort to build chips for other companies. By 2024, Nvidia was beating Intel and its stock fell 60% – prompting Gelsinger’s departure, noted CNBC.
