OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Lead Call to Prioritize Cybersecurity

Some of the world’s foremost tech giants and high-profile companies have banded together in an open letter to global policymakers, urging them to strengthen cyber defenses as AI becomes increasingly powerful.

The letter comes amid growing concern about the capability of AI following a number of recent security incidents, and strikes a somewhat ominous tone, stating that there is a “limited window” to get things done.

“In the coming months, AI-enabled cyberattacks will become far more widespread and sophisticated as models around the world become increasingly capable,” the document says. “The companies and public services our communities depend on -- from hospitals to water treatment plants to the infrastructure that powers the internet -- are at risk.”

The sense of heightened alarm has been exacerbated by a number of recent security breaches, sparked by OpenAI’s admission that its models had escaped a sandboxed testing environment and launched an attack on AI platform Hugging Face.

This was swiftly followed by admissions from Anthropic and Meta that their models had also broken free from supposedly isolated testing environments.

Significantly, OpenAI and Anthropic were among those that signed the open letter, although Meta was absent. Other big-name tech signatories included Microsoft and AWS, while Visa, Mastercard and General Motors were also on the list.

The letter says that there are “weaknesses that have accumulated for years” waiting to be attacked, and identifies areas where “all organizations, cybersecurity companies, technology partners, governments, and AI frontier companies,” can act to reduce the risk. And it argues that a collective response is essential, with global action required to maintain safety.

The call from the 100-plus signatories comes as lawmakers are taking a close look at how to rein in AI companies amid recent scares.
