Pixel 11 Pro: Why Agentic AI Can’t Hide Modest Hardware Upgrades

Google’s Pixel 11 Pro arrived with new features, improved hardware, and a corporate push to make agentic artificial intelligence a standard smartphone feature. After spending time with the Pixel 11 Pro over the last few weeks, has Google balanced its Gemini AI innovation with a spec sheet that’s a touch lower than other Android flagships?

Google Pixel 11 Pro: The Limited Utility Of The HiLight

Google’s rear-facing HiLight notification ring on the Pixel 11 Pro replaces functional hardware telemetry with a restricted call-alert system that limits third-party Android application integration.

Let’s start with one of the few different visual changes in the Pixel 11 Pro: the HiLight rear notification light. This RGB light ring sits next to the flash on Pro models and has a simple job: alert you to incoming calls and notifications while your phone is face down on your desk. If a caller on your priority list calls, you’ll get a discreet indication that you need to act. Google has also let Gemini access the HiLight software, so you can see when you are speaking to Gemini’s voice interface.

And that’s it. While calling remains a core function of a smartphone, communication is so much more than a direct-dial experience, yet those methods can’t access HiLight. A purple light when I get a WhatsApp from my wife is far more useful and flexible than call alerts alone. An alert function with an incredibly narrow set of circumstances it can alert you about, no extensions or third-party app access, and “you are using AI” visual feedback.

The HiLight is a wasted opportunity in terms of smartphone space, engineering time, and marketing energy. That space used to hold the temperature sensor, a niche but useful addition that continued through the Pixel 8 Pro to the Pixel 10 Pro. It’s an aesthetic trade-off that weakens the Pixel 11 Pro.
