US midterms: What a Democratic Congress could mean for AI giants like Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, and Meta

For technology giants such as Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google, the immediate concern may not be a sudden change in regulation but more investigations, questions over tax benefits, and pressure to address the impact of AI infrastructure on local communities.

The US midterm election results could bring greater regulatory scrutiny for some of the world's biggest artificial intelligence (AI) companies as Democrats regain control of the Senate. For technology giants such as Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google, the immediate concern may not be a sudden change in regulation but more investigations, questions over tax benefits, and pressure to address the impact of AI infrastructure on local communities.

Higher Scrutiny

Democrats have already indicated that data-centre taxation and public concerns around artificial intelligence will be among their investigative priorities. Daniel Goshorn, chief investigative counsel for Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee, told Reuters that the party planned to examine these issues if it regained control of the chamber.

A Reuters poll in October revealed that 69% of Democratic registered voters back limits on building data centers, compared with 43% of Republicans.

Higher Taxes on Data Centres

The expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure, particularly data centres, has emerged as an important political issue in the US. Concerns over rising electricity bills, water consumption, and the environmental impact of these facilities have prompted lawmakers to question whether technology companies should bear a larger share of the costs.

A Democratic-controlled Senate could give lawmakers greater scope to expand these investigations.

What analysts say?

Jake Dollarhide, chief executive of Longbow Asset Management, told Reuters that a Democratic sweep of Congress could increase regulatory pressure on technology companies, particularly those involved in AI. In his view, this could moderate the rapid growth in the AI sector.
