Why AI Speed Stops Short Of The Income Statement
Dr. Christophe Kolb is founder and CEO of Taller and co-author of Cognitive Kin: How to Work, Win, and Make Meaning with Agentic AI.
By now, most people have felt what AI does to their own work. We draft faster, search faster, code faster, compare options faster and summarize complexity faster. But many executive dashboards still look stubbornly ordinary and revenue per employee barely moves. This is the enterprise AI productivity paradox: the worker feels acceleration before the firm records output.
The paradox shows that AI speed only creates value when it passes through the organization into accepted work. A draft has value after approval. Code has value after release. A case has value after resolution. A recommendation has value after a responsible decision. Leaders who focus on that conversion gap will build AI programs around production over mere activity.
Measuring Conversion Yield
Most AI programs begin with usage and exposure metrics such as seats purchased and pilots completed. These metrics tell leaders that people touched the technology, but they reveal little about enterprise production.
The metric to focus on is conversion yield: accepted outcomes per AI-assisted first artifact, adjusted for review cost and the new work created downstream. In a sales organization, the unit may be prospect to customer. In software, it may be issue to release. In service, it may be ticket to resolution. In finance, it may be model change to approval.
A team that drafts proposals twice as fast creates little value if legal review doubles, customer tailoring weakens or win rates fall. On the other hand, a smaller local speedup can create more genuine enterprise value when pass-through is high and rework is low. Leaders should therefore measure the full workflow, from first artifact to accepted result.
Building Agentic Capital
Agentic capital has five parts:
1. Shared context gives people and agents common definitions and a live business state.
