A few weeks ago, at the peak of New Hampshire’s fall foliage season, a friend asked ChatGPT to recommend the best hike in the state. Its top pick was Artist’s Bluff, near Franconia Notch. When my friend arrived, the trailhead looked like a stadium entrance ten minutes before kickoff. Hikers moved single file, nearly shoulder to shoulder, along a roughly 1.5-mile loop that spends most of its length in the woods and saves its main scenic reward for the summit. Rather than join the line, my friend walked across the street to a ski mountain and discovered a maintenance road that zigzagged up the slope, offering panoramic views the entire way. ChatGPT never mentioned it.

The experience illustrates a growing concern about one of the fastest-growing uses of artificial intelligence in personal finance: asking what stocks to buy. AI can assist with that analysis, but it cannot reliably tell you how an unpredictable future will unfold.

What Is AI Stock Trading?

Platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude can evaluate financial statements, summarize earnings calls, compare companies and suggest stocks in seconds. Work that once took hours now takes a single prompt. That is genuine progress. But consider what happens when millions of investors ask these tools essentially the same question: “What are the best stocks to buy right now?”

The models draw on overlapping public data, analyst commentary and prevailing market narratives. Similar questions can produce similar answers, potentially directing investors toward the same securities.
