Why Falling Treasury Yields Could Send AI And Technology Stocks Higher
Technology stocks endured a rough stretch last week as concerns about the cost of artificial intelligence infrastructure, rising borrowing expenses and uncertain returns on investment fueled a sharp selloff.
Since then, shares have rebounded, even as questions about AI financing persist. The swings raise an important question: Do they reflect fundamental problems with the AI investment cycle or temporary financial pressures that could eventually ease?
The bond market may offer an answer.
Why Interest Rates Matter
For much of the past several months, rising Treasury yields have weighed on technology stocks. Higher interest rates reduce the present value of future earnings, putting pressure on valuations, particularly for companies whose profits are expected to grow substantially over time.
They also make borrowing more expensive. That’s particularly relevant for AI, given the investment required in data centers, computing equipment and supporting power infrastructure.
However, the recent retreat in Treasury yields offers some encouragement. After reaching approximately 5.3% in early October, the 10-year Treasury yield has fallen to around 5%.

Moreover, much of the earlier increase appeared to reflect expectations for stronger economic growth rather than a significant rise in long-term inflation expectations.
The distinction is important because stronger growth can support corporate profits, while persistent inflation could force the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates elevated.
There is also reason to believe inflation pressures could moderate. October’s Consumer Price Index reading may mark a cyclical peak, with easier year-over-year comparisons involving tariffs and energy prices potentially lowering subsequent readings.
If that happens, borrowing costs could stabilize further, easing pressure on technology valuations and helping companies finance future expansion.
