Anthropic promises once more to keep ads out of Claude's chat. In its IPO filing cover letter, the company explains why it is passing on a potential massive revenue stream that funds much of the internet. "People bring some of their most important work and most personal questions to Claude, and we want Claude's only incentive to be giving them a helpful answer," Anthropic writes, adding that "once advertising becomes part of a company's revenue targets, the pressure to optimize for engagement tends to grow. We have chosen not to introduce that pressure into Claude." Anthropic previously criticized rival ChatGPT for running chat ads, warning they could be more manipulative than traditional ads.
The ad ban falls under the letter's second category, which puts company values above profit. As another example, Anthropic cites Claude Mythos Preview, then its most powerful model, whose advanced cyber capabilities posed high risks. Adding extra safeguards delayed its release as Claude Fable 5, costing Anthropic revenue and market share against rivals, while the company also gave cyber defenders about $100 million in free Claude credits. As future models grow stronger, Anthropic expects more decisions that forego maximum profit.
