I Tried To Compare Seven AI College Advisers. Here’s What Families Should Know

A college list takes seconds to generate. Knowing whether it’s any good takes much longer.

AI college advisers promise to help students decide where to apply. But a polished answer can pair a real university with an outdated price and an admissions estimate that sounds more certain than the evidence allows.

I set out to compare seven products: MyUni.ai, Candor Apply, CollegeVine, GetInto.College, Counsely, Orbit and FindU. Access was too uneven to name a winner. An AI research assistant working under my direction checked public pages, previews and company-supplied materials against colleges’ own data. I did not personally use every product.

What I found

  • MyUni was the most transparent, sharing detailed materials and fixing errors we flagged. In one company-run example, it labeled the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign a “Safety” for a computer-science applicant, with a 74% admission estimate. Illinois’s own data shows 23.3% for first-choice engineering applicants and no CS-specific rate. After we raised it, MyUni changed the label to “Match” but kept a similar estimate, and agreed these were model outputs, not validated odds.
  • CollegeVine and Candor Apply showed Boston University costs of about $84,000 and $86,000 with no year or source. BU’s 2026-27 figures are $95,334 in billed expenses and $98,419 in total cost of attendance.
  • GetInto.College’s public AP calculator appears to omit a condition on Calculus BC credit at BU. That is worth verifying against the university’s guide.
  • Counsely, Orbit and FindU didn’t receive enough evaluation to judge.

An incomplete evaluation isn’t evidence of poor performance, and being transparent isn’t evidence of accuracy. This review establishes neither a best product nor a worst one.
